About A Class Act – Acting for Young People & Adults, Inc:

Our goal at AFYP is to provide actors of all ages with professional-level training in a supportive and fun environment. Through this training, we hope to help our actors develop skills that will serve them in all walks of life, on stage and off.

Our faculty is made up of working professionals in the industry – actors, directors and teaching artists who are constantly honing their skills through their creative endeavors and bringing those skills back to share with our students. Our faculty is listed on this page.

Incorporated as of January 31, 2002, A Class Act – Acting for Young People & Adults, Inc. (AFYP) was founded in 1997 and since 1999, the program has been sponsored by the City of Fairfax Commission on the Arts, as both entities had a similar goal of bringing high level acting training to families in the City of Fairfax and Northern Virginia area. In addition to Fall and Winter classes and Summer Arts Camps, AFYP offers Scout badge workshops, one-on-one coaching, and specially tailored in-school programs.

Thanks to our students and their families, AFYP was voted “BEST Children’s Theater/Education” in the 2006 “BEST FOR FAMILIES” annual reader poll conducted by Washington Family Magazine. AFYP has also been among the finalists for “Best Day Camp” each year since 2002.

AFYP was founded by professional actress and teacher Mary Lechter. She received her B.A. in Theater from U. of MD, and has taught at the Kennedy Center, The Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory, and is on the Theater Department faculty at George Mason University. A member of Actors’ Equity Association, the Screen Actors Guild, and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, Mary has performed regularly on local professional stages, and in television (ABC’s “All My Children”) film (“Avalon”) and radio (NPR’s Morning Edition). She was recently seen as Barbara Hoyle in Theater of the First Amendment’s production of Three Hotels.
